Making Strides in Accessibility

We are proud to announce that we began the 2017 season using the Figaro MobiTxt® Closed Captioning System for audience members who are Deaf/ Hard of Hearing (HH). Starting with Tribes in March 2017, all Mainstage productions at ACT now include multiple closed captioned performances.
ACT is the first theatre in Seattle to use this closed captioning system and is extraordinarily grateful to the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture for providing support to help with its permanent installation.

The Figaro MobiTxt® Closed Captioning System is a personal 4”x 6” tablet that may be reserved by any Deaf/ HH patron wishing to use Closed Captioning by calling or emailing the Ticket Office with the performance date/ time you are attending. The tablets are attached to a “gooseneck” stand on the arm of the patron’s seat anywhere in the theatre. Captioning will be run manually by an operator at each performance so there will be no delay in the display. Formatting, font size and color can be chosen from a selection of standard settings, and the display will only be visible to the individual using it and will not disrupt those seated nearby.

“Due to the unique nature of our spaces—the round and thrust shaped theatres—we are thrilled to have found this alternative captioning option,” Managing Director Becky Witmer says. “We’re all very proud to be able to offer this service of accessibility with such a state of the art system.”

ACT has also enlisted the assistance of Deaf Spotlight, an organization that supports creative works of, by, and for Deaf people in the Pacific Northwest, to ensure that the needs of the Deaf/ HH are being met appropriately.

“Not often do theatre companies make an effort to make the theatrical experience accessible for all,” Patty Liang, Executive Director of Deaf Spotlight, says. “ACT offers options: ASL interpreted performances on different dates and times, and captioning for multiple performances for the community to have the freedom to choose.”
